The distinction
AEO means answer engine optimization. GEO means generative engine optimization. The terms overlap in current usage. The useful distinction is whether you are measuring an extracted answer, a generated recommendation or a cited source.
You do not need two content programs merely because an agency uses two acronyms. Ask what will be changed, where the result will appear and what evidence will demonstrate progress. A clear scope is more useful than settling which label owns the task.
What AEO usually means
AEO is often used for making content usable in direct answers, including search snippets, question-and-answer surfaces and assistants. In that usage, a concise definition or an ordered procedure can be the main deliverable. Vendors also use AEO for generative AI work, so the term alone does not identify a channel or measurement method.
What GEO usually means
GEO focuses on visibility within generated answers: being named, recommended, quoted or cited. The GEO paper formalized an experimental framework for this problem. A business buying GEO work still needs to ask which engine and which outcome the supplier will measure.
| Proposed work | Concrete output | Evidence to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Answer a definition query | A clear, supported definition on a relevant page | The page and the answer surface being tracked |
| Improve buyer recommendations | Correct product information and relevant comparisons | Saved answers for a fixed discovery prompt set |
| Improve citation visibility | A useful source page with linked evidence | Which passages and URLs were cited |
| Fix a misleading brand description | Corrections to the actual source information | Before-and-after claims with dates and context |
Where the work overlaps
Both approaches can involve making public content accessible, writing clear answers, correcting inconsistent facts and providing sources. Reuse that work where it serves the same reader. Do not create a second nearly identical page solely to target a different acronym.
Example brief
“Explain whether a customer can export their data, which formats are supported and whether cancellation affects access. Link to the relevant help page. Track the same export-related questions in search and in selected AI answers.” That brief can be completed and reviewed without arguing whether it is AEO or GEO.
Where measurement differs
A rank tracker may record a search position or feature. A generated-answer tracker needs the question, collection surface, answer and citations. Search Console helps with search performance, but a team needing a dedicated featured-snippet history should verify that its chosen tool actually records that feature.
Do not combine counts with different meanings. A mention in an answer is not a search impression; an impression is not a lead. For a citation rate, define whether you count links to your own domain, third-party mentions of your company, or both. If two suppliers use different definitions, their percentages are not directly comparable.
Questions to ask an agency or tool vendor
- 1.Which questions, countries and engines will you cover? Ask for the actual list or selection method.
- 2.What will you deliver: a report, edited pages, drafts, external placements or all of these?
- 3.Who reviews and publishes changes? Make account access and approval responsibilities explicit.
- 4.How will you preserve the starting evidence and handle failed measurements?
- 5.What would count as a useful result, and what remains uncertain? Separate visibility from traffic and revenue.
Avoid duplicate work and unsupported shortcuts
A file, schema field or keyword pattern should solve a specific problem before it becomes a deliverable. The llms.txt proposal concerns agent access to website information; it does not establish a universal ranking boost. Google’s AI-search guidance says special AI files and special markup are not required for its AI search features.
Build one maintained set of product facts and source pages. Measure the relevant surfaces separately, then let the findings decide the next edit. If two proposed services change the same pages and produce the same evidence, ask what the second fee buys.
Put the findings to work
August connects visibility tracking with a reviewable next step: inspect the answers and citations, prepare a draft, publish through your own workflow, then check what changed. Copy the content or create a GitHub draft PR; you control what goes live. A follow-up comparison is evidence to examine, not proof that one edit caused a gain.
Get started with August. Compare the current plans: Starter includes 25 tracked prompts across one brand workspace; Pro includes 75 across three, with Google AI Overviews and AI Mode alongside the four core engines. Prompt allowances are shared across the account.

Questions, answered.
Are AEO and GEO the same thing?
They overlap, and suppliers use the terms differently. Ask for the target surface, deliverable and measurement before comparing offers.
Should we buy separate AEO and GEO services?
Only when the scopes justify it. Shared content work should not be charged twice simply because it is described with two names.
Which should we start with?
Start with a real customer question and the evidence you need. Fixing a misleading answer or an inaccessible page is a clearer first task than choosing an acronym.
