GEO vs SEO: What Changes, What Overlaps and What to Measure

· August Team

The distinction

SEO improves discovery through search. GEO focuses on how information and brands appear inside generated answers. Much of the content work overlaps; the measurements and controls differ by surface.

A team can rank for a useful query and still be missing from the shortlist an assistant writes. It can also receive an AI citation without ranking near the top for the exact wording it tracked in Google. Treat these as related observations, not interchangeable scores.

Keep the shared foundations

Google’s guidance on AI search features says existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. Google also says eligibility does not guarantee serving. That is guidance for Google’s surfaces, not a specification for every assistant.

Fix broken public pages, inaccessible text and contradictory product facts before chasing a new label. A customer looking for compatibility needs the same accurate answer whether they arrive through a search result or a generated recommendation. Clear navigation also makes it easier for people to find the supporting detail after landing.

Understand the click evidence

In a 2025 study of Google browsing behavior, Pew observed traditional-result clicks on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without one. Summary-link clicks occurred on about 1% of visits with a summary. This is an observational comparison for Google, not a measured click rate for ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity.

Use that finding as a reason to examine your traffic mix, not a reason to abandon search. Your category, queries and conversion paths may differ. Check whether changes affect navigational searches, research queries or high-intent product pages before reallocating budget.

Run two measurement views

  • For search, retain page and query performance, organic visits and conversion data. Use a tool that explicitly tracks a search feature when you need that feature’s appearance history.
  • For generated answers, retain exact prompt wording, date, surface, response text, source URLs and brand outcomes.
  • Keep branded prompts separate from discovery prompts. Asking directly about a company is a different test from asking for a shortlist.
  • Log failures and collection changes. Switching model or search settings can break a trend comparison.

Decide what to fix from the evidence

A practical triage sheet
ObservationUseful next check
Page absent from search and hard to fetchCheck access, indexing and internal links.
Search traffic healthy; AI answers describe the product incorrectlyTrace the incorrect claim to source pages and outdated third-party descriptions.
AI cites the page, but few leads followInspect the cited passage, referral attribution and landing-page fit.
Visibility rises after several simultaneous changesKeep the result, but do not credit one edit without further evidence.

Assign an owner and a specific deliverable to each finding. “Improve AI authority” is hard to finish. “Update the integration page to name supported versions and link its setup guide” is concrete enough to publish and recheck.

Allocate effort by the problem

If buyers cannot find or use your site, repair those fundamentals first. If the product is misrepresented inside answers, prioritize the source information behind the error. If you cannot tell which problem you have, spend the first week establishing a baseline. There is no universal SEO-to-GEO budget ratio.

Put the findings to work

August connects visibility tracking with a reviewable next step: inspect the answers and citations, prepare a draft, publish through your own workflow, then check what changed. Copy the content or create a GitHub draft PR; you control what goes live. A follow-up comparison is evidence to examine, not proof that one edit caused a gain.

Get started with August. Compare the current plans: Starter includes 25 tracked prompts across one brand workspace; Pro includes 75 across three, with Google AI Overviews and AI Mode alongside the four core engines. Prompt allowances are shared across the account.

Questions, answered.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Search and generated answers can both matter to a buying journey. Choose work based on the observed problem and measure each surface appropriately.

Does good SEO guarantee AI citations?

No. Accessible, useful pages still compete for retrieval and inclusion. Inspect actual answers for the questions that matter.

Can a visibility increase prove that my edit worked?

Not by itself. Keep comparable measurements and consider provider changes, competitor activity and sampling variability before attributing a cause.
